HISTORY OF GREAT PACIFIC

WHERE WE GOT OUR START

The Great Pacific is owned and operated by Carol Hanks and Ken Schulberg. Our restaurant is located in the old Masonic Lodge on the corner of Main and Emigrant in Pendleton, OR. The Masons built the Lodge in 1887 and held meetings and other gatherings on the second floor while renting out the bottom floor to local businesses. The main floor was divided by a brick wall allowing two separate store fronts. The building has been home to a dry goods store, women’s clothing store, athletic store, appliance store, book store, and even a funeral parlor throughout its history. When the Masons moved to a new location in 1980 we purchased the building and started the Great Pacific Wine and Coffee Company.

We started out selling wine, coffee and espresso (a first for Eastern Oregon). As our business expanded over the next 20 years we added a much larger wine and beer selection, draught beer and a large food menu. In 2000 we started a project to connect the two sides of the ground floor by creating four large arches through the brick wall. We also did an extensive amount of remodeling on the outside of the building to restore the facade to its original condition. Many of the architectural features had been damaged or purposefully removed throughout the decades. The building is now an historic monument in Pendleton and looks very much as it did when it was first built almost 120 years ago.
